The winter months are some of the most challenging for sweeper operators - with an increased workload and pressure to keep every vehicle operational in the cold, damp and dark conditions. To help, Scarab's expert After Sales team has produced a 'Good Practice' guide to Winter Maintenance to help our customers reduce costs by avoiding unnecessary breakages and deter unexpected machine downtime.
Please note, however, that this is a guide only and operators should use it in accordance with their Scarab Operators Instruction Manual.
Good Practice Tips
- Pre-Shift Checks
Before starting your shift, consider if the conditionals allow water to be used. If so, refit water filters, close off drain taps and close the rear door/lower hopper in accordance with the operator's instruction manual.
- Low-Pressure Water Pumps
Run the low pressure water pump until dry to avoid incurring breakages. If ignored, the following parts could end up being damaged: water pump, valve, eccentric, con rod, water pipes and fittings, water jets and water solenoids.- However, this advice excludes of Roller Pumps - this type of pump should never be run dry. A Roller Pump should be drained via the ball valve.

- High Pressure Water Pumps
Do not run the high pressure water pump dry but leave the drain taps open. If ignored, this could lead to damage of the valves and seals in the high pressure pumps.
- Water Tank
Drain the water tank via the drain tap and leave open - this will avoid damages to the water tank and the drain taps.
- Engine & Major Components
Ensure the anti-freeze mix is appropriate to suitably serve the engine and major components.
- Hopper
Raise the hopper slightly, open rear door and leave ajar at the end of the shift to protect the rear door seals, aperture seals and spigot seals.
- Caps, 'O' Rings & Gauzes
Make sure you remove the water filter caps, 'O' rings and gauzes to avoid damage to the water filters, hoses and fittings. We recommend that these are safely stored in the cab during this period.
- Windscreen
Check that the screen wash mix is suitable for the conditions you are working in. If not correct, this could damage the screen wash container, as well as hoses and fittings.
